Tony was a senior pupil when I began teaching at Manchester Grammar School and I remember him as mature beyond his years, yet with a wonderful sense of humour. It is a very special experience when an ex-pupil becomes a friend, as Tony did, and then someone to respect within one's own profession. I wish our paths had crossed more often, as Tony was always such good company. A sadly short life, but a life well lived.
